Melbourne Favourite Wins Australia's Wine List of the Year Awards 2024
The leading national awards for wine lists, Australia’s Wine List of the Year 2012 will open for entries on 14 February 2012 at www.winelistoftheyear.com.au.
Presented by Australia’s leading premium wine distributor Fine Wine Partners and highly respected wine magazine Gourmet Traveller WINE, the awards recognise the best lists in the country, large and small. Established in 1994 these accolades have seen enormous growth in style and sophistication in the hospitality industry over the past couple of decades.
“Consumers are actively seeking establishments offering a good selection of wine alongside their cuisine, with wine by the glass increasingly popular,” says Rob Hirst, Fine Wine Partners Chairman and past President of the Wine Communicators of Australia.
“Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards gives consumers a ‘roadmap’ to the best lists in fine dining, brasseries, cafes, international hotels, wine bars, pubs and clubs. The accolades also acknowledge and reward the skill, hard work and financial investment required to create quality wine lists.”
An independent judging panel reviews entries, awarding ratings of one, two and three glasses – with the highest ranking signifying their ability to compete with the world’s best. Chaired by award winning wine communicator Peter Forrestal, the 28 strong panel brings together wine writers, masters of wine and master sommeliers from Australia, UK, Europe, NZ and US.
While fine dining restaurants such as Rockpool Bar & Grill and Taxi Dining have taken out the top gong over the past five years, the winner is not always the biggest list. “Last year small Sardinian restaurant, Pilu at Freshwater’ was selected as the best list in Australia,” says Gourmet Traveller WINE editor, Judy Sarris.
“We are keen to increase listings for small venues, wine bars and gastro pubs alongside the fine dining stars in the 2012 guide.”
A new award will be introduced this year for the list with ‘The Best Representation of Australian Wine sponsored by A+ Australian Wine. Ratings and reviews will be published in the Aug/Sept 2011 issue of Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine.
